Learn how to make the perfect air fryer baked potatoes with crispy skin and a fluffy interior. Easy and ideal for any meal!

Having normally baked potatoes in the oven, I was very interested to see how they'd turn out after we bought our air fryer. You must try it...you end up with perfect crispy skin and a fluffy centre! The process is quicker and can be more energy-efficient than using the oven.

A baked potato is such a versatile dish, ideal to serve for a quick lunch or dinner side. The list of toppings is endless...try baked beans, tuna mayo, or spicy chickpeas for a hearty meal.

They're also delicious served alongside smothered chicken or BBQ ribs!

Tips

  • Oil-free option – skip the oil and rub or spray the potatoes with a little water instead.
  • Seasonings – try rubbing the skin with garlic powder or smoked paprika for extra flavour.
  • Don't worry if you don't have an air fryer - instructions to bake the potatoes in the oven are also included.
  • This perfect air fryer baked potatoes recipe is easily adapted if you’re cooking for less or more people.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of potatoes are best for air frying?

Maris Piper, King Edward or Russet potatoes are best due to their high starch content, which results in a fluffy interior and crispy skin.

Should I wrap my baked potato in foil?

No - wrapping in foil traps moisture, making the skin soft rather than crispy.

How do I make the skin extra crispy?

Rub the potato with a little olive oil and salt and cook it directly in the air fryer basket without foil.

Can I make baked potatoes in an air fryer without oil?

Yes - the skin may be slightly less crispy, but you can still get great results by simply seasoning and air frying.

How do I keep and reheat leftover baked potatoes?

Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 180C (350F) for 5 to 7 minutes.

Can I freeze air fryer baked potatoes?

Yes, but freeze them without toppings. Reheat in the air fryer for the best texture.

What are the best toppings for an air fryer baked potato?

Classic options include butter, sour cream, and cheese. Try topping with chilli, roast vegetables, or garlic mushrooms for variety.

HOW TO MAKE THESE PERFECT AIR FRYER BAKED POTATOES

Ingredients

  • 2 large floury potatoes (eg: Maris Piper or King Edward), weighing approx. 250g to 270g each
  • olive oil
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • topping(s) of your choice

Instructions

  1. Rinse the potatoes in cold water, pat them dry with kitchen roll and then prick the skins all over with a fork or sharp knife.   Rub them lightly with olive oil, sprinkle with some salt (salt helps to crispen the skins).
  2. Arrange the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Set the air fryer to 200C and cook for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a sharp knife goes through the potatoes easily. Check the potatoes after 20 minutes – if they seem to be browning too quickly on one side, turn them over using tongs, then check again after another 20 minutes to ensure they're cooked through. When ready, the skin should be crisp and the inside tender and fluffy. Split, season the inside with some salt and freshly ground black pepper, and serve immediately with the topping(s) of your choice.

Oven Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Rinse the potatoes in cold water, pat them dry with kitchen roll and then prick the skins all over with a fork or sharp knife.   Rub them lightly with olive oil, sprinkle with some salt and then bake directly on the shelf in the oven for 1 hour.    They might need a bit longer (15 to 30 minutes) if the potatoes are much bigger than 270g in weight.
